Bolinas Ridge is one of the few trails you can take dogs on within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Note a leash is required though. This route actually comprises two very distinct trips. The north half is a steady (though not steep) climb in open pasture. The south half is rolling ramble mostly through thick woods.

A pullout on Sir Francis Drake just east of Olema
The Route:
1,000 feet in open terrain for about 5 miles to a picnic bench and small rocky outcropping on open hilltop. There are various branching roads and trails, but the main route is straight up the ridge.

The Route:
The road slowly descends a few hundred feet over about 6 miles to the bench noted above. Along the way ,short steeper climbs and drops are more noticeable than the overall drop. Most of this section is thickly wooded with sections of deep redwoods and scrappy manzanitas.
